The Importance of Buying Irish Grown & Milled Flour

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in supporting local businesses and buying locally sourced products. This trend is not just a passing fad, but a necessary shift towards more sustainable and ethical practices. One area where this is particularly important is in the food industry, where buying homegrown products can have significant benefits. One such product is Irish flour, stonemilled from grains such as wheat, spelt, rye, Einkorn and Emmer grown in Ireland, which has a number of advantages over imported flour.

Supports Local Farmers and The Economy

By purchasing Irish flour, consumers are supporting local businesses and farmers, specifically James of Ballymore Organics and Emma and Pat of Oak Forest Mills, who work hard to produce high-quality products using sustainable farming methods. This, in turn, helps to create jobs and strengthen the local economy. Buying homegrown Irish flour also helps to reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation, as the product does not need to be shipped from overseas.

More Nutritious

Another benefit of buying Irish flour is that it is fresher and more nutritious than imported flour. Flour that is shipped from overseas is usually weeks or even months old by the time it reaches the consumer, and likely has lost some of its nutritional value and flavour. In contrast, our Irish flour is freshly stone-milled when we order it, preserving more of the natural germ, bran and oils than industrial roller milling, which retains more of the fibre, minerals and other nutritional components and gives it an exceptional flavour.

Less Pesticides and Fertilizers

Irish flour is milled from made from locally grown wheat, spelt and rye varieties that are well-suited to the Irish climate and soil. This means that the grain is more resilient and less likely to be affected by pests or diseases. Additionally, because these varieties are adapted to local conditions, they require fewer inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers. They also have the unique flavour and nutrition from the place they were grown, which we thinks make them all the more special.
